The 700 community foundations that exist in the United States (2005/2006 Report to the Community
Foundation Field) have an extreme potential to engage in community leadership by implementing initiatives,
offering program staff to manage them, and developing reliable funding resources to sustain them. From the
information gathered from organizations included in this research, the following are the most significant
criteria in implementing an initiative:  

1.        Considering the Philanthropic Landscape

2.        Structuring the Staff

3.        Engaging Support from Other Giving Agencies

4.        Pooling Funds

5.        Conducting In-Depth Research

6.        Creating an Information Infrastructure

7.        Engaging the Community in Technology-Based Dialogue

8.        Convening Responsibly
