A Community Foundation’s Programmatic Initiatives:
- Are programs created by community foundations in response to community needs.
- Fall outside of a community foundation’s grant-making programs.
- Promote innovative, collaborative solutions that address both current and future needs of the
community served.
- Engage the community in crafting sustainable approaches to important issues.
- Understand the context of whole systems in the attempt to improve conditions rather than alleviate
problematic symptoms.
- Highlight the importance of visionary community leadership in improving lives.
Community foundations of the 21st century have the unique opportunity to expand the response to community need through an innovative
approach in services offered: programmatic initiatives.
Community foundations typically adhere to the mission of strengthening the community in which they exist, and they are obligated to respond with
the most effective solutions to address the needs of the communities they serve.
With the ability to provide capital for major projects, many community foundations
have elected to employ programmatic initiatives and, through collaboration with
institutional partners, community foundations have actively helped execute lasting
and influential change.
Through devolution, the responsibility of addressing community-centered problems
has been transferred to more localized agencies, including community
foundations. Through programmatic initiatives, community foundations can
respond efficiently to the changing needs of a community, implement widespread
progress, and support civil and societal change.
