3. FAMILIARITY WITH THE COMMUNITY
By distributing grants to local organizations, building relationships with various community members and leaders, and
providing philanthropic services, community foundations can develop a substantial awareness of the communities served.
The current roles of foundations articulate the essential need for community foundations to sustain in-depth
knowledge about the challenges, opportunities, and strengths of the communities served.
How can our community foundation spearhead a project to get to know our community better?
• Launch a community indicators project
• Conduct research as a part of the competitive grants process
• Convene meetings involving the entire community
• Initiate friendly working group site visits
• Develop close relationships with leaders throughout your community
